Photographer documents final days of centenarian war heroes

Photographer Rao Liming took photos of seven centenarian veterans in Hunan province who made significant contributions to the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and spent their later lives peacefully.

Born in 1907, Zhou Xiulian is from Xinmao village of Changsha, Hunan province. Her late husband, Yang Ping, was a student of the Huangpu Military Academy and died in Myanmar in June 1943 while fighting against Japanese invaders as a regimental commander of the Chinese Expeditionary Force. He was posthumously promoted to major-general divisional commander. Zhou accompanied her husband in many battles, riding a horse and carrying twin guns. She served as a mailroom administrator at an affiliated factory of the troop. Afterward, she escorted her husband's remains back to Changsha. Zhou passed away in March 2022. Zheng Huizhuang, born in April 1916, is from Lukou township of Changsha, Hunan province. A graduate of the Huangpu Military Academy, she joined the 36th Army of the National Revolutionary Army (Kuomintang). During the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), she served as a nurse in the Hengyang battlefield hospital. When the KMT forces retreated to Taiwan in 1949, she refused to go and later established a free primary school in her hometown after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Zheng passed away in October 2019. The photo was taken at Zheng's home on Jan 29, 2016.

Born on Sept 22, 1916, Tian Yunyu lived beside the No 1 High School of Yunxi, in Yueyang, Hunan province. She decided to join the army after the July 7 Incident, also known as the Lugou Bridge Incident, which occurred in 1937 and marked the beginning of China's whole-nation resistance against Japanese aggression. She studied at the Huangpu Military Academy. During the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), she served as an instructor in an officer training regiment. After the war, she returned to her hometown to teach and later worked at Yuelu Hospital (the predecessor of the Fourth Hospital of Changsha) until retirement. Her former coach, Huang Ling, traveled from Wuhan, Hubei province, to attend her 100th birthday celebration. Tian passed away in September 2022.

Born on Dec 8, 1922, Sheng Jinyun is from Huangxing township of Changsha, Hunan province. In June 1942, he was recruited into the Chinese Expeditionary Force. He took part in the counterattack of western Yunnan, a critical campaign to reclaim Japanese-occupied territories in China's Yunnan province bordering Myanmar. After Japan's unconditional surrender in 1945, the expeditionary force was downsized, and he returned to his hometown. Sheng passed away in January 2025. The photo was taken at Sheng's home in August 2018.

Born on Aug 16, 1915, Liu Xianyu is originally from Jiangkou county, Guizhou province, and later lived in Yongle village, Chunkou township of Liuyang city, Hunan province. In 1932, he was conscripted into the National Revolutionary Army and fought in major battles, facing countless life-threatening situations. Liu passed away on Jan 29, 2016. The photo was taken at Liu's home in Liuyang on his 100th birthday in 2015.

Born on March 16, 1910, Fu Xiaoyu is from Miluo, Hunan province. In 1926, he joined the Northern Expedition, a military campaign to topple the incumbent, warlord-led Beiyang government (1912-28), to reunify China. He served as a lieutenant officer of the National Revolutionary Army. Later, he served at three newspapers as a reporter, interview director, and editor-in-chief. Among his accomplishments is his reporting on the Battle of Changsha. Fu passed away in Changsha on Dec 17, 2017. The photo was taken at Fu's home in Changsha on Dec 3, 2017.

Born in October 1916, Ren Longsheng was from Xinghua, Jiangsu province. After graduating from junior high school in 1931, he entered a medical school affiliated with the army. Following the outbreak of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), he was sent to a battlefield hospital as a lieutenant doctor. Later, he served as a doctor in key battles, such as the Battle of Tai'erzhuang, the Battle of Xuzhou, and the Battle of Wuhan.

In 1943, he contracted malignant malaria and was hospitalized. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, he worked at Hengshan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. He and his wife, Zhu Jinzhen, have six sons and two daughters, all of whom are still alive. Their eldest son is 76 years old. Four generations of the family, totaling 56 people, include three generations with twins. He passed away in July 2020. The photo was taken at Ren's home on Jan 29, 2017, during a family reunion on the second day of Chinese New Year.
