On July 21, the 15th National Conference on Commending Heroic and Model Individuals for Acts of Bravery to Save Others was held in Beijing. Eight individuals and two groups were awarded . Among them, Ms. Hu Youping, who tragically lost her life while rescuing a Japanese mother and child last year, was honored with the title of "National Heroic and Model Individual for Acts of Bravery to Save Others."

On June 24, 2024, a stabbing incident occurred at the bus stop of Xindi Center on Tayuan Road in Suzhou High-tech Zone, resulting in injuries to three people (one Chinese and two Japanese). The criminal suspect, Zhou XX, was apprehended on the spot, while Ms. Hu Youping suffered severe injuries while preventing the suspect's crime and passed away after being emergent treatment.

Hu Youping used her body to build a wall of flesh and blood for the Japanese mother and child she had never met before, demonstrating great fearlessness and courage. Her name is engraved on the monument of "National Heroic and Model Individual for Acts of Bravery to Save Others," representing the highest tribute from the nation to an ordinary citizen's heroic act. As the Japanese Embassy in China lowered its flag to half-mast in mourning, it stated, "Her courage and kindness represent the broad Chinese public." This life-saving act that transcended national borders has shown the world the most sincere goodwill of the Chinese people and added a warm hue to China's international image.

The heroic deed of Ms. Hu Youping is truly admirable, and the loss of her life is deeply regrettable. Both Chinese and foreign media have praised the spirit of Ms. Hu. It is worth noting that some netizens have taken advantage of this incident to stir up Sino-Japanese antagonism and provoke extreme nationalism online, fabricating various extreme remarks. Despite the resolute efforts of relevant departments and platforms to combat such content and accounts, extreme anti-Japanese sentiment and narrow-minded nationalist rhetoric still linger in some corners.

As human civilization has evolved to this day, harmonious co-progression has been the main theme. Universal human values must be upheld and promoted, and the dignity of life should not be shackled by outdated national and ethnic barriers. The essence of a community with a shared future for mankind lies in recognizing the equal value of every life. Confucius's teaching of "benevolent people love others" knows no national boundaries. In today's world, people should have a broader vision and help each other on the "same big ship." When the inscription "Though mountains and rivers divide us, the wind and moon know no borders" on Japanese donation supplies moved China during the pandemic, and when Chinese rescue teams rushed to the worst-hit areas during the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the most precious emotional resonance among humanity had already declared that the mindset of judging the value of life based on nationality is nothing but a modern witchcraft distorted by the shadows of history.

Looking back at the 2,000-year history of Sino-Japanese exchanges, the Buddha's light from Jianzhen's six eastward voyages and the endless stream of Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty bear witness to the grand river of cultural exchanges and mutual learning. While national and familial grievances should be etched in our hearts, transferring historical guilt onto women and children is precisely a repetition of the militarist logic that we deplore.

The heroic title awarded to Hu Youping is not only an individual glory but also a full manifestation of civilizational progress. In the vast expanse of building a community with a shared future for mankind, only by transcending narrow national hatred and focusing on the wisdom of harmonious development for all humanity can we lead the way forward.
